Sinus Infection Q & A
What is a sinus infection?
A sinus infection is a virus or bacteria that infects the sinus cavities, causing inflammation. This causes a variety of symptoms similar to those of the common cold, and these conditions are often confused.
What causes a sinus infection?
Most sinus infections are caused by bacterial infections. Patients with weakened immune systems may also develop sinus infections due to viral or fungal infections. Similarly, people who suffer from allergies may also be prone to developing allergic fungal sinusitis.
It is also possible that deformities within the sinus cavities can lead to sinus infections. In these cases, the structure of the sinuses prevents the normal removal of dust and other microscopic airborne debris.
When this happens, the mucus which normally carries this debris away gets trapped in the sinuses, leading to inflammation and congestion.
What are the symptoms of a sinus infection?
Sinus infections symptoms are similar to cold symptoms and include:
- Bad breath
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Facial pain
- Fatigue
- Green or yellow mucus
- Sinus pressure or congestion
- Sinus headaches
- Sore throat from post-nasal drip
- Teeth pain
- Tenderness and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead
If you have any of these symptoms, see the team at Northeast Medical, PC for expert diagnosis and treatment.
When should I seek care for my sinus infection?
If you have symptoms that indicate a sinus infection and they are preventing you from living your life normally or if they’ve lasted for over a week, you should seek medical attention. Most colds will pass after a few days, but a sinus infection may require medical treatment.
How are sinus infections diagnosed?
Your doctor at Northeast Medical, PC examines your sinuses and asks about your symptoms before making a diagnosis of a sinus infection. If you think you might have a sinus infection, get a medical assessment as soon as possible.
In some cases, your doctor will use a procedure called an endoscopy to see inside the sinus cavity to determine what is causing the blockage. As with almost all medical conditions, treatment is easier and more effective when it is implemented earlier.
How are sinus infections treated?
At Northeast Medical, PC, the team offers a variety of treatments for your sinus infection, such as:
- A prescription for antibiotics or antiviral medication
- Steroid treatments
- Sinus irrigation or nasal sprays
In severe cases, your doctor may use surgical procedures like balloon sinuplasty to remove blockages or to expand the sinus passages.
If you think you have a sinus infection, schedule an appointment at Northeast Medical, PC by calling the office or booking online.
