What is an immigration exam?

An immigration exam is an essential part of the immigration process for any non-American who wishes to move to the United States and become a permanent resident — also known as a green card holder. Every member of the migrating family must have an exam, even children. 

The purpose of the exam is to check every applicant’s health status in the interest of public safety. Some diseases hold significant risk to others if the applicant hasn’t been vaccinated or tests positive. 

In these cases, the agency that administers the green card system, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), may refuse permanent status or take alternative measures.

What does an immigration exam check for?

The immigration exam checks for any medical reasons why it might be in the public’s best interest to decline permanent residency. There are four reasons this might happen: 

• A physical or mental disorder accompanied by harmful behavior
  
• Failure to produce mandatory vaccination records
  
• A history of drug addiction or abuse
  
• A positive test for an infectious disease, for example, tuberculosis

How do I select a doctor for an immigration exam?

Only civil surgeons — doctors approved by USCIS — can perform immigration exams. Usually, USCIS or your immigration lawyer can provide a list of physicians local to you. You can schedule an immigration exam at Northeast Medical, PC.

What do I need to bring to an immigration exam?

When you come to Northeast Medical, PC for your exam, bring the following with you:

• Vaccination records
  
• Valid passport or government-issued photo ID
  
• Additional passport photos (check, as it varies)
  
• List of all medications
  
• Tuberculosis certificate if previously treated
  
• Report on learning difficulties and supervision needs, if relevant
  
• Certificate of clearance if you’ve had syphilis
  
• Payment 

If you have a history of violence or harmful behaviors, or if you’ve ever been admitted to a hospital for psychiatric or mental illness or alcohol or drug abuse, you must bring medical notes that detail your diagnosis, length of treatment, and prognosis.

If adjusting your status, you also need to bring your Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record.
